GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT GRADUATE HARP AUDITIONS

There are no set dates for graduate auditions, which may be arranged by contacting Elizabeth Richter.  A live audition
is  highly encouraged; in cases where travel to campus is not possible,  a recorded  audition is acceptable (video DVD).  Accompanists are not required.

You may play your audition on a  Ball State University harp, usually a Lyon & Healy Style 23 or 100.  You will have  an opportunity to warm up in the studio or in a harp practice room for at least  half an hour before your audition.  You are welcome to perform on your own  instrument if you wish, but because of the high demand for practice rooms  we can't guarantee that there will be one available to you for warmup.

Auditions last about 45 minutes and take place in the harp studio.  After you play you will have time to ask questions.   If you have not taken a lesson with me prior to the audition, I encourage you to schedule one later in the day.  As we work together  for an hour you will have a good idea of my teaching approach, and I will have  the opportunity to assess your potential in greater depth than is possible in an audition.

In addition to applying  to the School of Music, you must also apply to and be accepted by the Ball State University Graduate School.  We recommend that you submit the university application before you  come for your audition.

THEORY AND HISTORY PLACEMENT EXAMS

On the  audition day applicants are encouraged to take the placement tests in history  and theory (multiple choice; each test takes about 45 minutes). There are no set  times for these tests; arrangements are made by calling or emailing Kathryn McPherson, the secretary to the graduate  coordinator. Click here  for more information on the graduate  placement tests.
